“A chilling ghost story.”

Based on a short story by Walter de la Mare this one man play written and directed by Luke Adamson was first staged at the Bridge House in Penge and now comes for a second run to the Brockley Jack. It is a ghost story. In the pouring rain one winter’s night in 1910 a man takes refuge in a bookshop which, he discovers, is empty – no proprietor appears. He finds a hidden room and then a journal written by a young woman which he rashly reads after which things go awry as well as bump in the night. No spoilers. But it is going to be a long night which he is not going to forget if, indeed, he survives. Joseph Lindoe delivers an immaculate performance as the man although the star of the show is, one has to say, the sound system devised by Adamson who also directs and did the lighting design. The sound of rain falling is truly sinister. This is the second show from the Bridge House to transfer and it is a welcome collaboration as the two theatres have a different audience base and it gives both production and players a longer life. As ghost stories go this is one to chill the blood.
